Schirmer was born in Chester, Illinois in 1929 and spent his early years growing up on a small farm. Although he showed signs of having artistic talent a the early age of five, he did not take his are seriously until he was about thirty years old.
In 1949 he left southern Illinois and served three and a half years in the Air Force during the Korean War. In 1954 he married Carrel Davis form southeast Missouri and they have three children..... Kathi, Kristi and Paul D..

Paul’s talents range from Acrylic painting to pen and ink drawings. His education is in mechanical drafting and considers himself a self-taught artist, who has had a limited amount of art training form private art instructors while living in Texas. He was active in the Texas Fine Arts Association and has won many awards in competitive exhibits in Texas and Southern Illinois

For 29 years Paul was employed as a draftsman and company artist for Shell Oil Company of Midland Texas . and also for Consolidation Coal Company in Pinckneyville, Illinois. In May 1985 he took early retirement form Consolidation Coal Company to devote full time to his art work.

Working as a draftsman has helped him develop a very fresh and unique style of pen and ink drawings. This style also shows in his acrylic paintings. His paintings and pen and in drawings of old covered bridges, forgotten landmarks and old homesteads of the Midwest heartland are now in private collections.

Schirmer is a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church of Du Quoin and enjoys playing music with a small band at nursing homes and senior centers in the southern Illinois area. Schirmer's Art studio is located in the back yard of his home.  His works are sought after by collectors across the country. He now resides in DuQuoin IL .
